The convention on the Rights of the Child is one of the greatest gifts the adult world has given to the child. No one can claim that the rights of a child are someone else’s responsibility. We all share the responsibility. We must always be ready to
take responsibility when there is no one else to speak out for a child or to give care.
The lives and normal development of children should have first call on society’s resources and capacities, and
children should be able to depend upon that commitment in times of peace, in time of recession as in times of prosperity.
The convention embodies the promise that every child has the right to survive and develop, to grow healthy and
obtain education, the right to be protected against exploitation, neglect and abuse, the right to participate in decisions concerning his or her
own future, the right to be considered as an individual with inalienable rights.
In my capacity as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador over many years, Ihave seen how children suffer when their
basic rights are not respected. And I have seen how children can be given a good and a healthy life, even in conditions that are far from ideal, if we all work together. UNICEF, an organization that cares, has taken a lead role in showing the world that the convention on the Rights of
the Child can be used as our guideline and standard for all actions concerning children.
